Domingo Baca Canyon
The towering escarpment of the Sandia Mountains defines the eastern edge of Albuquerque. From a distance, the mountains and side canyons appear forbidding, rocky, dry, and desolate as, in many places, they are. Hidden from the distant view, however, are several canyons with surprisingly different environments. An intermittent, seasonal stream flows in Domingo Baca Canyon, named for a prominent 18th Century rancher and sheepherder who pastured livestock in the foothills. A trail follows up the canyon to the site of a tragic 1955 TWA plane crash which claimed sixteen lives. In places lush and overgrown, the canyon is visually chaotic and complex. Patience is required to tease out patterns and prominent features for photographs.
